The Surrounding Area

Peninsula Halifax was initially farmland, known as “Pedley Fields” and was developed shortly after 1815.
Birmingham Street takes its name from the birthplace of Mr. Pedley, and Dresden Row from that of Mrs. Pedley. The area south of Spring Garden Road was developed in the 1830-1860 period and became known as “Schmidtville” after the developer, Charles Schmidt, a grandson of the Pedleys(3,4).
The area was fully developed, small properties formed the south of Spring Graden
Road, while larger properties formed the North.
Spring Garden Road, west of Queen Street, became commercialized.
Lord Nelson Hotel is constructed.
Queen Street to South Park Street became significantly commercialized.
Commercialization of the area was complete.
